Manly Writers Festival: The Human Sound: Music vs AI

Part of The Night Shift—Human Creativity vs AI - Saturday 21 March, 8.00-10.00pm

Host: Alice Fraser

Con Campbell, Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier, Maximilian Holzner

If AI can generate music, what does human sound offer? In this closing session, musicians from different traditions respond to the same creative prompt — first as interpreted by AI, then through human instinct, collaboration and craft. Jazz improvisation, classical interpretation and songwriting sit side by side in a live exploration of listening and response.

The night concludes with a final song from Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier — not as a concert, but as a human answer to AI.

One scene. Five writers.

Radically different voices.

What happens when writers — and AI — are given the same story premise and asked to write it in a specific genre? This fast, funny live experiment reveals how tone, instinct and voice transform the same material in different ways. No commentary. No comparison. Just creativity in action.
